Basic lemons and acidulous milk: learn about your bodies pH-value

Did you know that lemons are not really sour? Did you know that milk does not give you stronger bones? The body’s pH-value and how food effects it is both ineresting and important, but far to few people know it. Several times I have felt confused by the fact that we talk so little about it.

The human body works best when neutral or slightly alkalic. In that condition the body can effectively take care of itself and keep control over bacteria and viruses. Most people would say that if you have got a cold you most probably have been infected by someone else. But, why we get sick is often because our body fails to constrain an already existing infection inside. Stressful lifestyle and acidic food is more likely to get you sick than a coughing colleague. And with a healthy lifestyle and diet your body will be much better at handling the germs you are exposed for.

The number one rule is that the more oxygen food contains, the more alkalizing it is. Avoid too much of processed food, meat, dairy products, sugar, and alcohol. They have the most acidic effect on your body. You may have heard that milk makes your bones stronger since it contains calcium. The hard truth is that milk does more harm than good. Your body will not benefit from the calcium in the milk. It has to take calcium and other alkalic minerals from the mineral reserves in your bones to neutralize the acidity of the milk. In other words: milk makes your bones weaker.

The best way to maintain a healthy ph-value is to eat green vegetables, and to drink pure water instead of , for example, soda water or coffee. If you are curious about your own ph-value you can find it out by a test on the Internet (basically you pee on a ”pH-stick” and then compare the color result with a diagram to see where you are on the scale). An easy way to see if you are acid or alkalic is to eat beetroots. If you pee red you are acid and if your pee looks normal (bright yellow) you are alkalic!

Note that the ph-value of the food as such is not what matters, but the effect it has when it is digested. Lemons are a great example of acid food that alkalizes your body. The reason for this is that your amazing body can convert the acid in the lemon to carbon dioxide and then transports it out through the lounges.

Last but not least, it is not dangerous to eat acidic food. A healthy diet contains both acidic and alkalic components. However, Americans eat about 80% acidic food and only about 20% alkalic. Ideally it should be almost the opposite; 60-80% alkalic food and 20-40% acidic food. If you want to know more I strongly recommend Kris Carrs’ book ”The Crazy Sexy Diet”. Kris Carr tells you all you need to know, and all you did not know you wanted to know!

A short lesson in pH-value:

  1. pH is a scale between 0 and 14 used to specify the acidity or basicity of a substance.
  2. Over 7 is basic (alkalic) and below is sour (acid).
  3. A common guideline is that water is neutral. Serviceable drinking water should have a pH-value between 7,5 and 9.
  4. One unit up or down on the scale is ten times more acidic or alkalic. For example: sulfur has a ph-value of 1, and is a hundred times more acid than lemon, which has 3 in ph-value.
  5. Ideally, the blood in a human body has 7,365 in ph- value.
